Burritt's Fresh Market is talkin' sauce in Traverse City!

January 10, 2016

In addition to quality food items, an amazing wine selection, exceptional customer service, and corner-store convenience, Burritt's has the sauce!!! "In 1987, Ken and Kurt Burritt ventured to create a small corner butcher shop in Traverse City, Michigan. Ken had a background in restaurant management and Kurt had worked in meat markets for years. They called their store Burritt's Meat Market. In just a short time, they found that their town was looking for more than a meat market—Traverse City needed a gourmet specialty store. So in 1988, the brothers expanded the store to include produce, groceries, beer, wine, and specialty... Read more

NOTICE OF LABEL ERROR!!!On Christmas day we received an important email message regarding an error in our nutritional facts. "Hello. I'm using your Poblano hot sauce this morning (which, by the way is awesome), but I noticed a potentially concerning item on the nutrition label. It states 1 tsp contains 65 GRAMS of sodium. Is this correct? Usually sodium is measured in milligrams, so 65 grams would equal 65,000 milligrams. I am hoping it is actually 65 milligrams so I can continue using it. Could you please clarify?" ~ Evan "Wow! You are correct. It should be milligrams. So keep enjoying the sauce!!! We... Read more

People’s Food Co-op is much more than a grocery store!

December 10, 2015

In 1971, the idea for a co-op began as a graduate student project under Professor Al Conner at the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work. Two students started a “buying club” as a way for low-income people to get fresh, healthy food. They brought food from the Eastern Market in Detroit and divided it into bags costing $5 a week. The project grew quickly as faculty and students joined the group. Today, People’s Food Co-op is member-owned and carries a full-range of groceries, produce & environmentally sensitive cleaning products. They buy from local businesses when at all possible and... Cloverleaf Fine Wine and Craft Beer Offers Hell Fire Detroit!

November 29, 2015

For more than 40 years, Cloverleaf has been the best source in Metro Detroit for fine wines and artisanal beers. Most wines they carry cannot be found anywhere else in town. Because they collaborate with niche winemakers who have no advertising budgets or massive trucking systems, they can offer a much better wine for the same value as mass producers. Cloverleaf stocks craft beers from around the world, but the crux of their collection lies in small-batch, handcrafted beers from Michigan breweries. The experts at Cloverleaf taste EVERY wine and beer before it goes on their shelves. (Not a bad job!) They can... Read more

Gearbox Rx becomes HFD’s second retail location!

November 21, 2015

This is so cool. Along the way, I was hoping to get HFD into unpredictable places like cigar shops, wine shops, barber shops, skate shops, tattoo shops, ski shops, etc. Because HOT SAUCE IS GOOD WITH EVERYTHING! But I never considered a CrossFit outfitter. Probably because I could be fitter. But HFD is a good fit. As owner Allen Parent states, “It’s Paleo friendly and a great addition to a clean-eating lifestyle.” Wow! Now you can feel better knowing HFD will improve your lifestyle. : ) GearBox Rx is the midwest’s premier shoe, clothing, accessory and nutrition retailer for functional fitness athletes who participate... Pronko Enterprises

November 21, 2015

I met Al Pronko a while back when he owned a tasty restaurant in Hamtramck called Maria’s Comida. Every meal was amazing. But his salsa was the buzz. So he and his daughter, Marie, started producing jars of Maria’s House Made Salsa to sell at the restaurant. As its popularity grew, they transformed the restaurant into a food manufacturing facility and eventually expanded their business to offer co-packing services for other micro-batch food entrepreneurs. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous to present my concoctions to Chef Al (and Sean, a professional foodie. More on Sean in another post.) It’s one thing... Read more

On November 10th, HELL FIRE DETROIT attended its first event, the 2015 Making It In Michigan Trade Show and Conference in Lansing, Michigan. We met so many really nice, smart and helpful people at this event. Buyers, distributors, restaurateurs, manufacturers, MSU students, farmers, entrepreneurs, journalists, foodies, lawyers, etc. Yes, even the lawyers were nice! Our minimalist booth was all the buzz. Thanks for the good vibes everyone!!! But one visitor was very special. A really nice MSU student (sorry, I can’t remember his name) came to tell me HFD was selected as one of three winners for the 2015 Westborn... Read more

HELL FIRE DETROIT is officially here! Hooray! Yeah!!! (Website only for now but in stores soon.) I know I’m a tad bit biased, but this hot sauce is delectable. Everyone who has tasted it agrees. Except for one guy. But he’s no longer with us. Teehee. : ) Unlike most hot sauces (which are mostly tinted-vinegar), this hot sauce respects the purity of each pepper. When you taste Poblano, you will know Poblano. When you taste Cherry Bomb, you will discover something completely different. Same goes with Manzana and Habanero. I can’t give away the secret formula, but we only add... Read more

When Al Bodrie told me I need a neon sign for my new hot sauce company, I thought to myself, “that’s the last thing I need.” Or to put it another way, there are a million other things I need to do before I ever consider a neon sign. Well, Al doesn’t go down that easy. He demanded my logo in two sizes and went ahead and bent neon for both. From this point forward, Al found himself in a nutty collaboration with me. Sorry Al. I wanted pure materials, just like the hot sauce. I wanted to eliminate any... Read more

Aloha Don!

November 05, 2015

Michael and I were so pleased to have been gifted your array of hot sauces to try for our very own. We also appreciated receiving your labels today in the mail, because having tried to reach your website, which hadn’t been launched, and just short of calling you, we were holding back on “cherry bomb,” thinking it was the closest thing to ghost peppers (you know, bomb and all.) Well, to our amazement, today your labels taught us not to fear. Read more
